Calcium

Most abundant mineral in the body (99% in bone and teeth), essential for skeletal mineralization, neuromuscular function, blood clotting (factor IV), and intracellular signaling.

Also: Ca

Adult RDA is 1,000-1,200 mg/d depending on age and sex. Absorption is by active transcellular (vitamin D-dependent, dominant at low intake) and passive paracellular pathways. Bioavailability is highest from dairy and low-oxalate vegetables. Excess intake (>2,000 mg/d) has been associated with kidney stones and possibly cardiovascular events, though the latter remains contested. Postmenopausal women, individuals with lactose intolerance, and vegans are at highest risk for inadequate intake.
