DASH Diet
Dietary pattern rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy, lean protein, nuts, and seeds, proven to lower blood pressure.
Also: DASH, Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension
Originally validated in randomized trials (DASH and DASH-Sodium) showing systolic BP reductions of 8 to 14 mmHg, comparable to single-drug antihypertensive therapy. Targets ~2,300 mg sodium/day (1,500 mg in DASH-Sodium). Recommended by the American Heart Association and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans as a first-line intervention for hypertension and a model for cardiovascular disease prevention.

DASH was established by NHLBI-funded trials in the late 1990s (Appel et al.). The combination of high potassium, magnesium, calcium, and fiber with low saturated fat is more effective than any single nutrient change. DASH-Sodium showed additive effects with sodium reduction. Beyond hypertension, DASH adherence is associated with lower CVD events, stroke, kidney stones, and type 2 diabetes.
