Drug-Nutrient Interaction
Effect of a medication on nutrient absorption, metabolism, or status, or vice versa.
Also: DNI
Examples: warfarin and vitamin K, MAOIs and tyramine, levodopa and high-protein meals, metformin and B12, PPIs and B12/magnesium, antibiotics and calcium/iron. RDNs assess for DNIs during medication reconciliation and adjust the nutrition plan or alert the prescriber. Critical in polypharmacy, especially in older adults and patients on transplant immunosuppressants.
