Dumping Syndrome

Symptoms caused by rapid emptying of gastric contents into the small intestine, common after gastric surgery.

Early dumping (15 to 30 minutes after eating): abdominal cramping, nausea, diarrhea, tachycardia, sweating, due to fluid shifts into the bowel. Late dumping (1 to 3 hours): hypoglycemia from exaggerated insulin response. MNT: small frequent meals, separation of solids from liquids, avoidance of simple sugars, emphasis on protein, fat, and complex carbohydrates with soluble fiber.
