FADS Gene Cluster
Gene cluster (FADS1/FADS2/FADS3) encoding delta-5 and delta-6 desaturases that catalyze rate-limiting steps in long-chain PUFA biosynthesis from α-linolenic and linoleic acids.
Also: FADS1, FADS2, Fatty acid desaturase
Common FADS variants markedly affect circulating arachidonic acid, EPA, and DHA levels. The high-activity (D allele) haplotype is much more common in African and South Asian populations than European, with implications for omega-3 status on a vegetarian diet. FADS variants modify responses to dietary PUFA in lipid and inflammation outcomes and are central to precision nutrition arguments.
