Glutathione Peroxidase (GPX)

Family of selenocysteine-containing antioxidant enzymes that reduce hydrogen peroxide and lipid hydroperoxides using reduced glutathione as electron donor, generating water and glutathione disulfide.

Also: GPX, Glutathione peroxidase

Eight GPX isoforms differ by tissue distribution and substrate preference. Erythrocyte GPX (GPX1) is used clinically as a selenium status biomarker. GPX4 reduces phospholipid hydroperoxides and is the central regulator of ferroptosis, a form of iron- and lipid peroxide-driven cell death increasingly implicated in disease.
