Nutrition Screening
Brief, validated process to identify clients who currently have or are at risk for nutrition problems and should be referred to an RDN.
Screening is performed quickly by any qualified health professional (often nursing on admission) and is required by The Joint Commission. Validated tools include the Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST), Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form (MNA-SF), and Nutrition Risk Screen 2002 (NRS-2002). A positive screen triggers a full nutrition assessment by an RDN. Screening is not itself a step of the NCP but is required to identify clients who need it.
