Precision Nutrition
Approach to dietary recommendations that integrates individual characteristics (genome, microbiome, metabolome, lifestyle, environment) to optimize health outcomes beyond one-size-fits-all guidelines.
Also: Personalized nutrition
Ordovás (Ch 123) distinguishes three levels of personalization: general (life stage, sex), individualized (phenotype, biomarkers), and precision (genotype, microbiome, omics). Demonstrated examples (APOE × fat, TCF7L2 × glycemic load, BCO1 × β-carotene) are real but modest; the chapter cautions that commercial DTC precision-nutrition services have outpaced the evidence. PREDICT and other postprandial-response studies are advancing the field empirically.
