Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
Autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells resulting in absolute insulin deficiency.
Also: Insulin-dependent diabetes, T1DM
Usually diagnosed in childhood or young adulthood, T1DM accounts for ~5 to 10% of all diabetes. Requires lifelong insulin therapy via multiple daily injections or pump. MNT centers on insulin-to-carbohydrate ratios, correction factors, carbohydrate counting, and prevention of hypoglycemia, DKA, and long-term microvascular and macrovascular complications.
