Panera Bread Nutrition Calculator: Calories, Macros and More

A Panera Bread Nutrition Calculator is a simple way to estimate the calories, macros and dietary content for standard and custom orders, from a cup of soup to a full You Pick 2 with a baguette and a lemonade. Our tool, featuring updated dietary information, shows how individual menu items and ingredients affect a meal's calories, protein, carbs, sugar, fat and sodium, then offers practical suggestions for making the order healthier and more balanced, but still enjoyable.

Whether you're ordering soup, a salad, a sandwich, a You Pick 2, breakfast, a bagel, a smoothie or a coffee drink, this calculator helps you understand what is actually in your food and make a choice that fits your goals without giving up the items you enjoy.

Build your Panera order and experiment with small changes to see how portion size, soup choice, dressings, side selection, bread and drinks can influence the final nutrition facts.

What Powers the Calculator: Transparent Math, No Perfection

How does this Panera calculator work?

This calculator starts with publicly available Panera Bread nutrition and ingredient information. We rebuild each order from its individual menu items and components so when you choose half portions, swap the side, change a dressing or resize a drink, the math stays consistent and useful.

Panera's menu changes more often than most chains, with seasonal soups, rotating salads and periodic menu overhauls. Combined with hand-prepared portions, that means calculator results should be treated as estimates rather than exact laboratory-tested numbers for the food you receive.

Why is my order a few calories different from the Panera app?

Our calculator estimates nutrition by adding up the individual parts of your order. Because of rounding, portion differences and how customized items are calculated, a standard order may be a few calories different from the total displayed by Panera.

The benefit is that each change you make, from an apple instead of a baguette to dressing on the side, is reflected in your final estimate.

What nutrition information does this calculator include?

The calculator estimates:

  • Calories
  • Protein
  • Total Carbohydrates
  • Total Fat
  • Saturated Fat
  • Sugar
  • Sodium

Sodium deserves special attention at Panera. Soups, breads, deli meats and dressings are all significant contributors, and a soup-and-sandwich combo can stack them faster than a burger meal.

Can I calculate an entire Panera meal?

Yes. You can add an entrée or a You Pick 2, the side that comes with it, a bakery item and a drink to see the estimated nutrition for your complete order. The side and drink decisions matter here more than most places: baguette versus apple, and lemonade versus water, can swing a meal by a surprising amount.

Can I use this calculator for weight loss, high-protein, low-carb or lower-sodium orders?

Yes, but use the results as estimates.

  • For fewer calories, use half portions and You Pick 2, choose broth-based soups over cream-based, pick the apple side and keep dressings on the side.
  • For more protein, compare chicken-forward salads and sandwiches, egg-based breakfast items and Greek yogurt. Many Panera items are lighter on protein than they look, so this is worth checking.
  • For fewer carbs, salads with protein are the anchor. Bread bowls, baguettes, bagels, pastries, smoothies and lemonades are the main carb sources.
  • For less sodium, compare soups carefully, choose half portions, and go lighter on cured meats, cheese and dressings.

The best choice depends on your complete order, appetite and goals. A lower-calorie item is not automatically higher in protein, lower in sodium or more filling.

Why should I trust this Panera calculator?

We created this Panera nutrition calculator to make cafe ordering easier and more transparent. Gary and I track nutrition and understand how difficult it can be to estimate an order once combos, sides, dressings and drinks are involved.

This tool was built to help solve that problem. It calculates nutrition based on the individual parts of your order, including portion size, soups, salads, sandwiches, sides, bakery items and drinks. Our goal is to make the information as useful and accurate as possible while being clear that food is prepared individually and nutrition values can vary.

We also update the calculator as menu items, ingredients and serving sizes change, which happens often at Panera. Maintaining a tool like this takes time, but the work is worthwhile when people make more informed choices without overcomplicating their meal.

Is Panera Bread healthy?

Panera has one of the strongest health reputations in fast casual, with clean-ingredient commitments and a menu full of soups and salads. Some of that reputation is earned, and some of it is a halo. A broth-based soup with a half salad is a genuinely balanced lunch. A bread bowl of cream soup with a baguette side and a large lemonade is a very different meal wearing the same brand.

The restaurant does not determine whether your choice is healthy. The portion, the specific items and the sides and drinks matter more, and at Panera the gap between the lightest and heaviest versions of lunch is unusually wide.

There is no need to make the perfect order. A better order is one that you enjoy, understand and intentionally choose.

The Biggest Things That Change Panera Meal Calories

Portion Size: Full, Half and You Pick 2

Panera is one of the few chains where half portions are a first-class menu feature. A You Pick 2 with two half portions is often more satisfying than one full entrée, and it naturally caps the size of the meal. Portion choice is the biggest lever on the menu.

Cream Soups vs Broth Soups

Soup sounds light, but the category splits in two. Broth-based soups like chicken noodle and vegetable soups sit at the light end. Cream-based soups like broccoli cheddar and creamy chicken wild rice are closer to comfort food, with meaningfully more calories, saturated fat and sodium per cup. Same menu section, very different meals.

The Bread Bowl

The bread bowl adds a large amount of bread to whatever soup goes inside it, and the soup inside is usually a cream-based one. It is a treat format, not a soup format. If you love it, count it as the whole meal and keep the rest of the order light.

Salad Dressings and Toppings

Panera salads are built on excellent foundations, and the dressings and crunchy toppings decide the totals. A fully dressed salad can rival a sandwich. Dressing on the side, using half, is the easiest fix that preserves the salad you actually ordered.

The Side Choice

Most entrées come with a choice of baguette, chips or an apple. It is a small question with a real answer: the apple is the light pick, and the baguette quietly adds a bread serving to a meal that often already includes bread. Choose deliberately.

Bagels, Pastries and Sweet Drinks

The bakery case and the beverage station are where balanced orders drift. Bagels with cream cheese, pastries, smoothies, lemonades and sweetened coffee drinks each carry dessert-level sugar or calories. Keep the one that matters and count it in the calculator.

How To Use You Pick 2 Strategically

You Pick 2 is the best portion-control tool Panera offers, and it rewards a little strategy. The strongest pattern is pairing one lighter half with one richer half: a broth-based soup with the sandwich you love, or a half salad with a cup of the cream soup you came for. You get variety and the indulgence, at half the indulgence's size.

The weakest pattern is accidentally pairing two rich halves and a baguette, which rebuilds a heavy meal out of health-sounding parts. The calculator makes it easy to compare your pairing before you order.

With the apple as the side and water or unsweetened tea to drink, a well-built You Pick 2 is one of the most balanced fast-casual lunches available anywhere.

Lower-Calorie Panera Items To Start With

Menus rotate seasonally, so treat these as categories to look for rather than a fixed list.

Broth-Based Soups

Chicken noodle and vegetable-forward soups are among the lightest items on the menu and make excellent You Pick 2 anchors.

Half Salads with Grilled Chicken

A half salad with chicken and light dressing delivers protein and produce at a modest size. Watch the crunchy toppings and dressing amount.

Turkey and Chicken Sandwiches, Half Size

The leaner deli sandwiches in half size are moderate, satisfying picks, especially with the apple side.

Greek Yogurt and Oatmeal at Breakfast

The parfait-and-oatmeal end of the breakfast menu is lighter than the pastry case and more filling per calorie. Egg-based sandwiches are the protein-forward alternative.

The Apple Side

The humble apple is the best side swap on the menu: fruit instead of a second bread serving, with no flavor sacrifice if you were not craving baguette anyway.

Healthy Panera Orders To Try

These are not the only healthy Panera orders, and they are not meant to be perfect. They are starting points you can adjust in the calculator above based on your own goals.

The Balanced You Pick 2

How to order: Half salad with grilled chicken plus a cup of broth-based soup, apple side, water or unsweetened tea.

Why it works: Protein, produce and warmth in one meal, with every portion naturally capped. This is the template Panera does best.

Broccoli Cheddar, Done On Purpose

How to order: A cup of broccoli cheddar paired with a half salad, apple side, no bread bowl.

Why it works: You get the soup people actually come to Panera for, at cup size, with the salad providing the volume the cup does not.

Protein-Forward Breakfast

How to order: An egg and cheese breakfast sandwich or Greek yogurt parfait with black coffee or unsweetened tea.

Why it works: Protein does the filling, and skipping the pastry-plus-sweet-latte combination keeps breakfast from becoming dessert.

Sandwich Craving, Managed

How to order: Half of the sandwich you actually want in a You Pick 2 with a broth-based soup, apple side.

Why it works: Half of your favorite beats all of a compromise. The soup rounds out the meal so the half sandwich is genuinely enough.

How To Build A More Balanced Panera Order

Start With the Item You Actually Want

Choose the soup, salad or sandwich you want first, then size it. Panera's half portions make this easier than almost anywhere else.

Learn the Soup Split

Knowing which soups are broth-based and which are cream-based is the single most useful piece of Panera knowledge. The calculator makes the comparison instant.

Take Dressings on the Side

Half the dressing keeps most of the flavor. This one habit keeps salads in the category you ordered them from.

Answer the Side Question Deliberately

Apple, chips or baguette comes with almost every order. Deciding once, before you are standing at the register, removes a daily drift point.

Watch the Drink Station

Lemonades, smoothies and sweetened coffee drinks can add dessert-level sugar to an otherwise balanced meal. Water, coffee and unsweetened tea keep the meal about the food.

Look at Sodium as Well as Calories

Soups, breads, deli meats and dressings make Panera one of the saltier health-branded menus. Half portions are the easiest sodium fix, since they halve it automatically.

Best Panera Orders By Goal

If your goal is fewer calories:

Build a You Pick 2 from a broth-based soup and a half salad, take the apple, and drink water or unsweetened tea.

If your goal is more protein:

Compare chicken-forward salads and sandwiches, egg-based breakfast items and Greek yogurt. Check the protein numbers rather than assuming; some attractive items are lighter on protein than they appear.

If your goal is less sugar:

Choose water, coffee or unsweetened tea, and be mindful of lemonades, smoothies, pastries, bagels and sweetened dressings.

If your goal is fewer carbs:

Anchor on salads with protein, skip the bread bowl, baguette and bagels, and keep an eye on sweetened drinks and fruit-heavy smoothies.

If your goal is less sodium:

Choose half portions, compare soups in the calculator before assuming, and go lighter on cured meats, cheese and dressings.

If your goal is a vegetarian meal:

Vegetable soups, meatless salads, grain bowls when available and egg-based breakfast items give Panera one of the deeper vegetarian benches in fast casual. Check protein and add Greek yogurt, eggs or cheese where the meal runs light.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Panera actually healthy, or is it a health halo?

Both, honestly. The menu contains some of the most balanced fast-casual meals available and some genuinely heavy ones, and the branding does not distinguish between them. The calculator exists precisely to tell them apart, order by order.

Is broccoli cheddar soup healthy?

It is a cream-based comfort soup, richer in calories, saturated fat and sodium than the broth-based options. It can absolutely fit as a cup in a balanced meal. In a bread bowl, it is a large indulgence and worth treating as one.

How many calories does a bread bowl add?

A lot; it is a large loaf of bread serving as the dish. If the bread bowl is the point of the visit, enjoy it as the entire meal and keep the sides and drink light. The calculator can show your soup with and without it.

Are Panera salads always a light choice?

No, and that is not a criticism. With full dressing and rich toppings, some salads rival sandwiches. With dressing managed, they are among the best items on the menu. The build decides.

Why is sodium so high in some Panera meals?

Soup, bread, deli meat and dressing are all sodium-dense categories, and a soup-and-sandwich combo includes all four. Half portions and lighter dressings bring it down fastest.

Can I use this calculator for food allergies?

The calculator may help identify ingredients, but it should not be used as an allergy-safety tool. Panera bakery-cafes use shared preparation areas and equipment, so cross-contact with allergens may be possible. Review the official ingredient and allergen information and speak with a qualified medical professional when necessary.

What should I do if an item is missing or looks incorrect?

Send us a note using the contact link in the footer below. Panera's menu changes more often than most, seasonal soups rotate, and some items vary by region. We review requests and update the calculator when reliable information becomes available.
